Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
