France to begin intercepting small boats in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered too great a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will start taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
